Symon is mentioned as a perambulator in an 1190s charter of Earl David at Kennethmont, Aberdeenshire. He witnessed at least six other charters before 1234 which indicate that he was a son of Bertolf.

He was associated with Walter FitzAlan (High Stewart to King David I) whom he probably served as a household knight. This service resulted in his move to western Scotland where he was recorded at both Renfrewshire and Dunbartonshire. Between 1225 and 1235 he witnessed the charter whereby his son Hugh acquired the estate at Dalnottar. He also had another son named Simon of Lectehtwerling in Dunbartonshire.

It is likely that he was also the father of William Fleming of Stanhouse, progenitor of the Kirkmichael sept of the Fleming clan.
